Autumn Blog 2016
WELCOME TO THE NEW TERM!
As memories of the summer holidays start to fade we welcome this term our new Year 12’s into WG6 along with our returning Year 13’s. An exciting academic year to look forward to including a History trip to Auschwitz, Germany, a ski trip to France, a Geography trip to New York, and another to Iceland to name but a few. However, before we roll full steam ahead into the year, let us take a moment to reflect back on the wonderful things that happened at the end of last term.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS ICMA STOCK MARKET TRADING COMPETITION
On Tuesday June 6th ten Business and Economics sixth form students competed in the ICMA stock market trading competition at the Henley Business School, University of Reading.
The students were put into pairs and given the objective of making as much money as possible in two trading sessions. The students were given a crash course on stock trading in a replica trading floor with state of the art facilities. After a gruelling two hours of trading Yucel Hulusi and Chris Briant triumphed making a profit of 600K. Both students were presented with an Ipad along with a trophy for the school to proudly display. This was a fantastic experience for the students which gave them a true reflection as to what it would be like to work on the trading floor.

EVEN MORE GOOD NEWS ON THE ALUMNI FRONT!
One of our former students is now in the middle of his post graduate studies in biochemistry. Lyndon Newins is currently studying for a PhD at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology (ISMB). The institute which is jointly run by the University College London (UCL) and Birkbeck, is one of the leading research institution in the study of Structural Biology, Proteomics, and Chemical Biology, an area which seeks to exploit the knowledge of protein function to further our understanding of human diseases.
Lyndon at work!
The opportunities provided by WGSB were paramount to my being in the position I am today, in particular a placement arranged by WGSB at biotech company Abbott Diagnostics in Dartford and the Biochemical taster course at UCL which was arranged by Dr Musami back in summer of 2009 were useful extracurricular experiences which greatly helped me secure a place on the undergraduate programme at Southampton.
Lyndon
We should all be immensely proud that Lyndon is doing his Doctorate studies at such a prestigious centre. Lyndon is keen to visit the school whenever time allows, to come and give talks as well as encourage our students into taking the scientific research route into biochemistry and molecular biology. Lyndon has two brothers who are currently at WGSB (Alex and Joseph). We all wish him all the best as he delves into the fascinating world of ‘Coat protein complexes’ and look forward to seeing him next academic year.

During the week of 13th to the 20th July it was work experience week for the Year 12’s. A host of companies ranging from construction to city trading were involved in recruiting students for a week of work in the real world! Please see below some fantastic feedback we have received from companies……
Elliott is proving to be a great help already and we want to hold on to him! Attached are some photos. He was working with IT yesterday, today on Sales. On Monday he will be joining one of our Senior Operation Managers on some site visits. He is a very positive reflection of your school.
